{"id":82,"date":"2007-11-24T19:28:55","date_gmt":"2007-11-25T00:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.altschuls.net\/erica\/blog\/?p=82"},"modified":"2007-11-28T19:45:56","modified_gmt":"2007-11-29T00:45:56","slug":"and-the-winners-of-the-gas-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.altschuls.net\/erica\/blog\/?p=82","title":{"rendered":"And the winners of the gas game&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you rent a car, you have two choices: buy a tank of gas up-front at current average market prices, or pay a premium (usually almost twice average market price) for the fuel they need to refill the car with once it is returned.\u00a0 The &#8220;game&#8221; to play when doing this is buy the full tank of gas up-front, then see just how empty you can get the car before returning it.<\/p>\n<p>I hereby declare us to be the winners of that game.\u00a0 We managed to <em>run out<\/em> of gas 0.2 miles from the rental agency, and had to push it in to return it completely empty of fuel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.altschuls.net\/erica\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/gasgame.png\" title=\"Gas Game\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altschuls.net\/erica\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/gasgame.thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Gas Game\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mind you, this is a very stupid game; if we had run out just 0.1 miles sooner, we would have been stuck on I-190 in heavy traffic. That&#8217;s 0.003 gallons of gas.\u00a0 0.3% of a gallon.\u00a0 That&#8217;s ridiculous, and it was a not-so-gentle hint that we probably shouldn&#8217;t play stupid games with gasoline levels with two small children in the car and a plane to catch.
